Celebrity chef criticized over SA Tourism gig

The South Australian government has been criticized over its use of celebrity chef Gary Mehigan as the face of tourism for the state.

The Melbourne-based chef and host of Masterchef Australia has been tourism ambassador for the South Australian government for the past 12 months but the opposition say his promotional values and lack of knowledge on the state aren’t good enough.

“My question is Gary, where the bloody hell are you?” shadow tourism minister Zoe Bettison said.

Gary Mehigan‘s position as SA tourism ambassador has been critisized by the opposition.

In a recent radio interview, Mehigan was left red faced when he failed a quiz about certain foods associated with the southern state.

“Labor should spend less time cooking up personal attacks on a much-loved Australian chef and more time on helping to promote our wonderful state,” SA Tourism manager David Ridgeway said in a statement.

The deal was made 12 months ago, just one week before March elections when Labor was still in power.

“I’d like to see what this deal actually does,” Ms Bettison said.

The SA government has confirmed there are no plans to dump Mehigan as the face of SA Tourism, with several events both here and internationally scheduled in the coming months.
